- Well, I've seen a fair amount of questions regarding the new generation of
- muti-function telephony cards and I recently decided to jump in the water
- and try it myself.
-
- I decided to get the 3500 primarily because of its features which include:
-
- 28.8 kbps modem (v.34)
- 14.4 kbps fax
- VoiceMail functions
- Built in 16-bit Soundcard (Soundblaster or Windows Sound System Compatible)
- Upgradeable to wavetable audio
- Built-in CD-Rom connector for IDE, Mitsumi, Panasonic, etc...
-
- Personally, I like the card A LOT and would recommend it to others.
- However, be aware of my system, I am using an AMD-100 MHz CPU with 20 meg
- ram, 420 meg HD with Windows 3.11 for Workgroups. I initially installed in
- when I had only 4 meg ram and it gave me some form of error loading voice
- functions in windows (yet it ALWAYS worked, go figure?). I have never had
- any error since I upgraded my memory. I have no reason to believe this
- system would have any difficulties with 8 meg ram, but then again I have
- never used it with just 8 meg.
-
- The Software is INCREDIBLE! I can easily say that this software is VERY,
- VERY versatile. In fact, I could see this software being run on a 5-line
- system, more than a one-line system. It is THAT powerful. On the other
- hand, I believe it is simple enough to use for the home user. It features
- powerful voicemail functionality and has very good sound quality. When you
- receive a call you can have the computer notify you by phone, pager or fax
- (or not at all if you choose). I could tell you all the little nice
- features but that would be a bit much.
-
- Ok, Steve, so are there any bad points?
-
- Glad you asked, I do have three minor gripes, (only three???).
-
- First, there is no usage of Caller ID in the software included. The card
- itself DOES recognize Caller ID, but the packaged software doesn't. This is
- more a wish on the part of the software than the hardware. The Caller ID
- feature DOES work with other software though.
-
- Second, the Data Host mode, which would allow you to access your computer
- from the office, relies on Comit software. Although it does work, if you
- disconnect from the call improperly, the software doesn't reset itself
- properly and the voicemail won't answer until reset. I haven't resolved
- this problem yet, but I'm working on it (as are others I've spoken with.)
-
- Third, technical support from Diamond is.....in a word.....shitty. They
- suck at answering the phones. (I called twice, got diconnected once and
- gave up after 20 minutes on the other.) I have heard similar complaints.
- They supposedly answer their e-mail, but only after a day or two. I sent
- e-mail once which was never responded to.
-
- All in all, I still HIGHLY recommend this card. I like it a lot. Yes, it
- does have some minor sticking points (show me a similar card that doesn't!)
- but it is still a good system.
-
- I think that covers almost everything. If anyone has any questions, feel
- free to e-mail me and I'll tell you what I know.
